Rubrics use established grading criteria to objectively assess student performance. A rubric gives clear guidelines on how to evaluate or grade student projects, presentations, or papers by providing a standardized, compact checklist from which to grade. Rubrics also let students know what instructors expect from them on their submitted assignments.
While rubrics may take time and effort to create, they also make grading easier and more consistent. Since the criteria for assessment are clearly defined in gradations from poor to excellent, a rubric can be used as a guide for planning and gives students clear targets of proficiency. The slower summer semester can be a great time to design and connect rubrics to assessments, saving time during the busier semesters.
In SOLE the rubric grading scales can be attached to Assignments, Discussions, Chats, and Journals. You must designate specific points in for criteria, and they cannot be defined in terms of ranges. The point scales are simplest when designed to be linear, e.g., 0, 1, 2, etc. rather than a 0, 5, 10, or 1, 2, 8 scale.
To create a rubric, access the Gradebook from within Assessment in the left navigational panel. From there, click the Settings tab and scroll down to Rubric scales to begin creating your rubric.
