LockDown Browser

Note: Not all SOLE installations support the LockDown Browser.

The SOLE LockDown Browser is a secure browser designed specifically for taking exams in SOLE. It prevents users from printing, copying, navigating to other URLs, or accessing other applications during an exam. When enabled, exams cannot be taken using a standard browser. SOLE LockDown Browser should only be used for SOLE exams and is not compatible with other SOLE areas.

The LockDown Browser resembles a standard browser, but with specific limitations:

  1. Modified Toolbar: The toolbar only includes Forward, Back, Refresh, Stop, and Character functions.
  2. Exam Mode: Exams appear in full-screen mode and cannot be minimized, resized, or exited until submitted.
  3. Disabled Controls: Printing, keystrokes, screen grabs, function keys, and right-click menus are disabled.
  4. Links: Links to external sites open in a secure window, limiting navigation beyond that page.
  5. Blocked Features & Applications: The Start button (Windows), system tray, and menu bars are disabled.

Creating a LockDown Exam

Creating a LockDown exam is as simple as selecting a checkbox in the Advanced Settings of the exam. For detailed guidance, refer to the Help Pages for Adding an Exam and Defining Advanced Exam Settings.

Once enabled, a LockDown Exit Password is automatically created but can be edited. This password allows users to exit the exam early, which is useful for troubleshooting, such as when a connection is lost.

You can change the password even after an exam begins. However, an Exit Password change will not affect users currently in the exam; they will need to use the original password, while users who start after the change will use the new password.

Practice Exams

To ensure a smooth experience, have students complete a practice exam using the LockDown Browser before the first graded exam to confirm proper installation.
