Grading Essay Questions
Essay questions require manual grading through the Exam Reports section. When an exam contains ungraded essay questions, a Grade Exams button will appear under the Completed section. Clicking this button will take you to the Ungraded tab within Exam Reports.
Grading by Student
By default, grading is set to Grading by Student mode. This approach displays a list of student attempts:
- Click the Grade button next to each student’s attempt to view and grade their essay submission(s).
- You can leave feedback on the essay submission. Note: Feedback will only be visible to students if Question Feedback is enabled in the Student Reporting Levels section under the Advanced Settings tab and if the grades are released.
- Click Grade to save the points and feedback for each question.
- Once all essay submissions for a student are graded, their name will disappear from the Ungraded list. Their submission can then be reviewed under the Graded tab.
Grading by Question
If there are multiple essay questions in the exam, you may find it easier to use the Grading by Question option:
- Click Grading Questions to switch to grading by question rather than by student.
- This method allows you to grade all submissions for a single essay question one after another.
- Use the Next and Previous buttons to navigate through responses to the same essay question, making grading more consistent and efficient.
