Creating Exam Questions

Accessing the Exams Tool

To get started, open the Exams Tool. At the top of the screen, you’ll see two options for managing questions:

  • Question Bank: Add, delete, and manage questions.
  • Import/Export Questions: Import or export questions in plain text or other supported formats.

To create new questions:

  1. Click Question Bank, then select the green Circle + button at the top left.
  2. Choose from the available question types: Multiple Choice, True/False, Essay, Matching, Fill in the Blank, Multiple Select, Ordering, and Hotspot.

Adding and Formatting Questions

When adding a question, use the HTML editor toolbar above the dialog box. This toolbar contains standard word processing tools for entering and editing text.

  • Copying from Word: Use the "Paste from Word" button to remove extra formatting, ensuring optimal question display during exams.
  • Inserting Images: Click the Image icon on the HTML toolbar to open the image dialog. Use the Browse button to upload a new image or select from the File Manager. Avoid pasting images directly to prevent display issues.

Organizing with Titles, Categories, and Tags

Under the Title, Category, & Tags tab:

  • Add a title, category, and tags for easier question organization.
  • To add categories and tags, type in the text box, then select the suggested text to save it. You can also reuse previously added tags.

Adding Feedback and Notes

The Feedback & Notes tab allows you to provide feedback that students will see upon exam completion, depending on the exam’s settings:

  • General Feedback: Displays for all questions, regardless of the student’s answer.
  • Correct Answer Feedback: Shows only when a student answers correctly.
  • Wrong Answer Feedback: Shows only when a student answers incorrectly.

Notes can also be added here, which are visible only to instructors for additional context.

Finalizing the Question

Once the question is complete, click:

  • Save to exit, or
  • Save and make another to continue creating more questions.
