Grading using GradeMark within Turnitin

Please note: not all SOLE installations will include Turnitin.

In order to use Turnitin to grade the assignment a rubric must be attached to the assignment.

Once you have clicked on the Turnitin assignment the student submissions will be listed on the page under “Paper title/author.” The title will be listed as a link under the student’s name. This link can be clicked to open the submission within the Turnitin Document Viewer.

The Turnitin Document Viewer will also give you access to the Originality Report and GradeMark.

  1. Originality Report – Once students have submitted their papers to your class, Originality Reports will be generated for the submissions. Click the gray “Originality” button on the top left of the screen. The Originality Report can be viewed in four modes. For more information click here.
  2. GradeMark – Adding comments to a paper in GradeMark is as easy as clicking where you would like to add the mark, entering your comment, and clicking Save. You can also use Quickmarks from the sidebar. For an interactive demo on using GradeMark, please navigate to the following URL: https://Turnitin.com/demo/dv

You can see the “Paper ID” number and the “Uploaded” date/time on the right side of the screen. The light blue pencil icon can be clicked to open the Document Viewer in order to use a rubric to enter a grade for the student.

The overall Similarity is also displayed; there will be a colored square and a percentage listed. The percentage indicates the overall similarity index of the paper, based on how much matching text was found. A paper containing an acceptable percentage will be depicted by a green box. A paper with an overly high percentage will be depicted by a red box. For more information on similarity please review the information regarding the Originality Report above.

You may also download a submission and delete a submission by using the two gray buttons on the very right of the screen.

Grading Using SOLE Gradebook

Turnitin assignments are automatically connected to the Gradebook. The Quick Grade tool can be used to manually enter individual grades for the assignment. Quick Grade cannot be used to grade assignments that are graded using SOLE Rubrics.

  1. Access the Quick Grade tool by entering the Gradebook through Assessment.
  2. Locate the assignment and use the gray button with a downward arrow to access the Quick Grade feature.
  3. Grades will be entered on the left side of the screen. Click “Save’ to save grades, “Save & Close” to save the grades and close Quick Grade, and “Cancel” to discard the grades you have entered.
  4. If you would like to release the grades immediately check the “Release to Students” check box before saving the grades.
  5. If Small Groups are being used, Quick Grade can be used to grade by group. Once you have clicked Quick Grade check mark the box next to “Grade by Groups” at the bottom of the grader and then add points for each group.

You can also access the Detailed Grader for the assignment from within the Gradebook. You will not be able to view the student’s assignment submission but you can enter a grade, leave student grade feedback, and write personal notes on the assignment using Detailed Grader.

Please Note: In order for students to view their grade for the assignment within the Gradebook the grades must be released in SOLE. However, if the Feedback Release Date (set through Turnitin’s settings) has passed they may be able to view their grades by looking at the assignment within the Turnitin tool. Keep in mind, if the Feedback Release Date has passed then the students have access to their grades for the assignment regardless of its release status within the SOLE Gradebook.
