Naming Preferences

It is good practice to use only letters, numbers, dashes, and underscores in the names of files and folders which will be used on the web.

  • A good example: lecture_5_bob-wednesday.ppt
  • A bad example: Lecture #5 Bob's Lecture, Wednesday (Good version).ppt

To make this process easier, when you save a file, especially a Microsoft Word document, it is better to name the file yourself, rather than letting the software name it for you. For instance, if you are writing a memo to the office about the water collection fund, you might want to name the file "memowatercollection.doc" instead of letting Microsoft Word name it "Memo To: Office Staff.doc."
