Availability

The exam will automatically be published in Draft mode, which means it is in the design phase and unavailable for students to take. This allows you to modify the exam before releasing it. On the Availability tab you have the ability to change your availability options:

  1. Draft – the exam is in design phase and unavailable for users to view.
  2. Released – the exam is available to students, subject to set availability restrictions.
  3. Closed – students can no longer take the exam, but the instructor can adjust the grading. The exam will remain visible to students but they will not be able to enter it.

The Availability tab also lets you set time restrictions that define additional options such as entering a released date, due date and expiration date, setting a time limit, and defining a password.

  1. Selecting a Released date sets the date/time that the exam becomes available to students. This means you can set the exam as released then add a future date so that it automatically releases.
  2. The Due date is the last possible date/time that students may submit an exam. Once the due date passes the student will still see the exam listed within the Exams tool and may review the exam if Student Reporting Level have been enabled in the Advanced Settings of the exam.
    • When the student clicks on the exam the Due Date will be listed in red on the top of the page.
    • Once the Exam is launched, if no time limit has been set, then the timer will pop up on the bottom of the screen to alert the student when there are five minutes or less remaining until the Due Date passes.
    • If a student is still in the Exam and the Due Date passes, then they will be alerted that “Your time is up” and will be prompted to “Submit Exam” as is. At this point, no further questions may be answered or saved. If you have allowed for the Student Reporting Level to be reviewed, the student may review the exam after it is submitted.
  3. The expiration date sets a date/time in which the exam must be completed and submitted. Once an exam expires the exam will no longer be visible to students and any Student Reporting Levels that have been enabled cannot be reviewed.
    • When the student clicks on the exam the Expiration Date will be listed in red on the top of the page.
    • Once the Exam is launched, if no time limit has been set, then the timer will pop up on the bottom of the screen to alert the student when there are five minutes or less remaining until the Expiration Date passes.
    • If a student is still in the Exam and the Expiration Date passes, then they will be alerted that “Your time is up” and will be prompted to “Submit Exam” as is. At this point, no further questions may be answered or saved and the student cannot review the exam afterwards.
  4. If you need to add additional time to an exam you can update the Due Date and Expiration Date during the exam. If the exam is timed, the timer will also update to show the new time on the students’ exams.
  5. The Time limit sets the amount of time that students have to complete the exam once they have started taking it and it is based on server time. A timer will display on the screen while the student is taking the exam.
    • When the student clicks on the exam the Time Limit will be listed in red on the top of the page.
    • During the Exam the timer can be viewed by hovering over the Timer icon on the top left of the screen OR the student can click this icon to display the timer during the duration of the exam.
    • If no time limit is set, the timer will only display during the last 5 minutes of the exam when a Due Date and/or Expiration Date is set.
  6. Time Limit Overrides can be used to give different time limits to individual students within the same exam.
    • To override the time limit begin by clicking the green Override Time Limit button and entering the time limit in minutes next to the appropriate user’s name.
    • If a time limit is set for the exam all students will have that amount of time unless individually overridden using this setting.
    • For example, if the exam time limit is 60 minutes but you have one student who needs 90 minutes, then a Time Limit of 60 should be entered for the exam and then the time for that one student should be overridden to 90 minutes.
    • Click the Save Overrides button to save the overrides. Students who have been given time limit overrides will be listed on the Availability tab after they have been saved.
  7. You can also set up an Exam Password that must be entered to gain access.
  8. You can also choose to display the exam in Content by clicking the check box.
